In honor of World Ovarian Cancer Day on Friday, May 8, two Houston-based ovarian cancer foundations, Judy’s Mission and SPB4OVC, are co-hosting a N.E.D. film screening and reception at Sundance Cinemas. The award-wining documentary follows an unconventional rock band made up of six GYN surgeons, each passionate about music and outraged by the wall of silence and under-funding surrounding these types of women’s cancers, including ovarian. While the record levels of public awareness and research funding for breast cancer are to be celebrated, “below the belt” cancers remain taboo. The goal of N.E.D. is to trigger major changes in cancer funding and awareness and elevate public awareness of GYN cancer to the same level as breast cancer.

Both Judy’s Mission and SPB4OVC were founded in honor of their namesakes, who despite healthy lifestyles, were diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer and passed away within less than two and a half years. While battling the disease, both women’s mission was to raise awareness about the vague symptoms and ineffective screening procedures associated with ovarian cancer. A portion of each film screening ticket benefits ovarian cancer awareness.

Tickets are $20 each, which includes movie snacks and the film screening, and a cash bar will be available. $10 garage parking is reimbursed at the box office. For more information and to purchase tickets: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/ned-screening-event-tickets-16249400394.

Judy’s Mission Ovarian Cancer Foundation Completed a $100,000 Endowment in Honor of Judy Robinson

Judy’s Mission Ovarian Cancer Foundation completed a $100,000 endowment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Program in honor of Judy Robinson. The endowment was started in 2010 when Judy, a NASA scientist who maintained a healthy lifestyle, was diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer and died 10 months later. Before she passed away, Judy expressed a desire to make a difference. She wanted to ensure what happened to her did not happen to any other woman. The endowment is funded by donations made to honor Judy’s mission, and supports the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Program’s goals of developing a new understanding of the causes of ovarian cancer, new methods for detecting and screening, and targeted therapies for the individual patient.
