Sail-a-thon 2012 Recap
The Harvest Moon Regatta® or HMR is on offshore sailboat race from Galveston to Port Aransas. The race occurs annually in October near the full moon. In 2012, a new trophy was awarded to the boat (or virtual boat) which raised the most funds benefitting ovarian cancer awareness and the Judith Liebenthal Robinson Ovarian Cancer Foundation.
In its first year, the Sail-a-thon raised over $7,500 in donations with 33 boats and virtual boats participating. The sailboat Katana, owned by Terry Young, was awarded the 2012 Sail-a-thon Trophy for raising $915. Volunteers from the JLR Foundation were in Port Aransas to meet will sailors, crew and family members to share information about the signs, symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer. Judy Robinson was an avid sailor, boat owner and HMR competitor. She was a member of the HMR Committee and great supporter of the event. Despite a healthy lifestyle, Judy was diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer and died within a year. While battling ovarian cancer, Judy determined something must be done to raise awareness regarding the vague signs and symptoms and ineffective screening tools for ovarian cancer. The Judith Liebenthal Robinson Ovarian Cancer Foundation was founded to further Judy's Mission
1) To educate the medical community as well as women on the signs, symptoms and the critical nature of early diagnosis of ovarian cancer
2) To fund research for effective screening and treatment of ovarian cancer
